DASD Alumni Spotlight: Sonya Sackash

Sonya Sackash

Were there any teachers, coaches, or classes that had a lasting impact on you?

Mr. Hanslovan was a wonderful teacher.  Loved Ms. Hawkins in choir and Mr. Swope in band.

What activities, clubs, or sports were you involved in as a student?

Band, chorus, national honor society and co op.

Tell us about your current career or professional role. What does a typical day look like for you?

I have worked for Priority Media home of Sunny 106 and Connect FM as the Promotions Events Director for the past 6 years.  It's a very rewarding job.  I plan the events at the radio station including the mock crash at DAHS, the Family Expo, Police Appreciation Day, Best of Tri County Party, Kids in Business and the Halloween Parade to name a few.

What led you to pursue this career path?

I worked in non profits in the past and did a lot of fund raising events,  so I decided I could plan events.

What do you find most rewarding about your work?

Working with the people of our community is the most rewarding.

Have you received any recognitions, awards, or achieved milestones you're especially proud of?

I have received two Pennsylvania Association Broadcasting Awards (PAB).

I have been awarded grants to do the mock crash and our Think! Don't Drink Contest from the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board.

I collaborated with my boss at Priority Media to start the first Hope Squad at the DuBois Area Middle School.   We were the founding school in Pennsylvania.

How did your experiences at the DuBois Area School District help prepare you for your career or further education?

I took all business courses; they helped prepare me for the real world.

If you could go back to high school, what goal-setting advice do you wish someone had given you?

I wish someone had told me to never give up.  Life is too short, and your dreams can come true.

What skills or habits do you believe are most important for students to develop while they're in school?

You should know how to read, write, and use a computer.

How do you stay connected to the DuBois Area School District community or give back to others?

I am an advisor to the Hope Squad at the Middle School and the High School.   Also, I plan the mock crash each year at the High School.
